Old Navy's New Ad Sparks Major Controversy
May 10, 2016 |
It’s amazing how a simple advertisement can generate such backlash. Earlier this month, Old Navy posted an ad to Twitter promoting a sale. The text read, “Love from our family to yours,” and the tweet featured a photo of an interracial family.
Almost immediately, according to The New York Times, the brand was hit with a social media frenzy. Hashtags, like #BoycottOldNavy and #WhiteGenocide, pushed for the brand to apologize for its display of “anti-White” propaganda.
However, Old Navy didn’t back down—and many rallied in support of the brand’s message on social media. Hundreds of people offered up their stories of interracial love, using the hashtag #LoveWins.
Even Sen. John McCain’s son got in on the Twitter action:
“We are a brand with a proud history of championing diversity and inclusion,” Debbie Felix, an Old Navy spokeswoman, said. “At Old Navy, everyone is welcome.”
