When it comes to the hottest merchandise in 2017, Supreme and Gucci cornered the market. So, it’s a little surprising to hear this week’s must-have merchandise comes from a group of PTA moms in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

We all know Brooklynites tend to be on the forefront of the fashion trends, but according to The Cut, the PTA at PS 84 elementary school truly set a new standard for school apparel. For this year’s PS 84 branded merchandise, the PTA traded in the school’s old logo for a modern look with a “retro flare.”

The new logo is appearing on everything from beanies to dolman-style T-shirts, and everything features bold color-ways that are grabbing attention everywhere.

“People come up to us in different neighborhoods and ask us, ‘What’s PS 84?’ ” said Sarah Srygley, one of the PTA co-chairs, who freelances for Finnish fashion maker Marimekko, according to the New York Post.

The merchandise ranges from $10 to $40, and it’s been such a hit that the PTA is considering opening an online store, so even non-students can get their hands on the hot items.

The designers behind the apparel didn’t posses any inside intel as to what was trending. Instead, they simply took note of what seemed to be popping up on residents in the neighborhood. Beanies were trending, so beanies became a PS 84 option.

As a result of PS 84’s success, other nearby schools are revamping their apparel offerings.

This story is a great example of how to create a successful branded apparel campaign. In order to understanding what’s trending for apparel, all you have to do is look around and notice what people are already wearing. It doesn’t have to be complicated. From there, don’t underestimate the power of a fresh, eye-catching logo.
